Discussion
Questions
1.
Let's talk about your vision for the instruction library of the future.
- What
would be on your wish list?
- What would be on your
needs list?
- How
would you see information being packaged for the library user?
- How
do you want to be interacting with library “students?”
2. How will evolving
technologies (chat, video, mobile phones, Voicera™,
interactive voice response, etc.) affect your instruction style
and your interactions with students?
- How will librarians keep
up with
the resources
and tools they will need to do the job?
- How can UALC help?
3. Would instruction librarians be willing to share their expertise
with colleagues who may not be as familiar with evolving technologies?
- What
technologies are these?
- How can we be most effective
in sharing our knowledge and skills?
4. What skills will instruction librarians need to develop in order
to be effective in engaging their students with information literacy
tools
and resources?
5. Among Utah’s institutions of higher education there have
been varying levels of success in integrating information literacy
into the
academic curriculum. Some institutions have not had strong support from
their administration for establishing a standard of information literacy
for their incoming and outgoing students.
- How can instruction librarians
work together to encourage a core level of information competency
for all of Utah’s incoming freshmen?
- What level of information competency should students leave the
University with?
Let’s talk about what this level of competency would look like!
6. Should librarians
establish instruction standards for institutions of higher education
in Utah?
- For example, should academic librarians
be
expected to teach a certain number of hours per month?
- Should the instruction
librarian attain a minimum level of competency?
- How would you achieve
this standard?
