Assignment #1b     More Symphony/Mixing/Transitions/Superimpositions/Filters/etc.

Use Final Cut Express if you are editing in the Library.
Click here for a graphic of where Final Cut Express is on the Libraries computers. Do not use Final Cut Pro (v6.0.2) in the Library because we can't open FCP 6.0.2 projects with the software in class room.  You will need to open your project in the classroon on Tuesday. We can open the Express projects.

Cut a new Symphony for Sound F/Xs and Human Face  using the same sound f/xs and the movie of black background (blacck with ambient audio sp08.mov) or the psd of black background (black sp08 fxs.psd), all three files are in the public folder in my (maxwell) server folder.  Use each of these techniques/effects at least once in your new Symphony. At least give them all a try and have fun.  Make sure it's 1 minute long.

FOR MORE DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS USE THE HELP Help > Final Cut Express HD Users Manual OR USE THE BOOK.

    1. Audio:
        A. Volume control/ fade-up and fade-out.  Click on the Toggle Clip Overlays button on the bottom left of the Timeline and then use the Selection Tool (arrow) to adjust the volume. Use the Pen Tool to put in rubber band points on the Timeline to fade the sound up or down.
        B.  Audio Filter (like an echo)  Select the clip you wish to affect then Effects > Audio Filters > etc.
        C. Speed. Select the clip you wish to affect then Modify > Speed > etc.
    2. Video:
        A. Transitions  I DIDN'T DEMO TRANSITIONS SO USE THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND THE HELP.
            1. Dissolve.
Click on the Toggle Clip Overlays button on the bottom left of the Timeline and then use the Pen Tool to put in rubber band points on the Timeline. Use these points to adjust the opacity of the clip in or out.
            2. Other Transitions: Place a clip over another clip on the Timeline where you want the transition to begin.  Put the Selection Tool on the beginning of the top clip and the Selection Tool's icon will change from an arrow to the edit point adjustment tool.  Single click (if you double click you will open the Edit Trim window) on the Timeline. This will create a a highlight shape at the beginning of the clip. Go to Effects > Video Transitions > etc.  If the trasitions are grayed out it probably means you double clicked on the front of the clip and the Edit Trim window is open, close the Edit Trim window and it will allow you to select a transition.  Once  you have selected a transition the front of the clip will have an transition icon on it.  If you wish to adjust the transition, double click on this icon and the transition will open in the Viewer and allow you to adjust length, border, etc.
             3. There are other ways to apply transitions,  see Help or the book.
        B. Superimpositions
            1. Viewer>Motion>Opacity (or adjusted on the Timeline using the Toggle Clip Overlays and Selection Tool or Pen tool).
        C. Video Filters (key type, or  blurr, etc)
            1. Key Type: Select the clip you wish to affect then Effects > Video Filters > Key > select a key type like Color Key. Now double click on the clip, this will move it into the Viewer widow.  Click on the Filter tab at the top of the Viewer window and adjust the key controls.
            2. Garbage mattes: Select the clip you wish to affect then Effects > Video Filters > Matte > select a matte type like Eight Point Garbage Matte. Now double click on the clip, this will move it into the Viewer widow.   Place the Playhead on the Timeline over a frame, you will see cross hairs with little numbers in the Canvas.   Click on the Filter tab at the top of the Viewer window and select a point and then click on the Canvas where you wish that point to move to, etc..
            3. Other filters (try some)
        H. Image and Wire Frame
            1. Resizing  Place the Playhead on the Timeline over the clip you wish to adjust. Select the clip  (click on it in the Timeline).  In the Canvas select the Image button (on the top of the Canvas window just right of center).  Select Image+Wireframe.  Now select the Scale button (on the top of the Canvas window just left of center) and select a scale that is smaller than the Canvas window so you can get at all of the corners of the image. Use the Select tool to resize the clip by grabbing one of the corner handles of the clip.
            2. Repositioning, Rotating same as above except you grab the clip in the center to reposition it and on an edge away from the corner to rotate it.
         I. Speed: Select a clip on the Timeline go to Modify > Speed > etc.
    3. Title-Superimpose your full name for  3 seconds on a 4 second slug at the start of your piece.  To create a Title (your name) select the A button on the lower right of the Viewer , then Title > Title.  Click on the Controls tab...  (You create a slug in with the same button)
