6) The folder(s) you selected will mount on the desk top and the folder(s) window will open.
7) Open the Public folder in the maxwell folderr and move the file you need to the Documents folder of the computer.
a) If you want to move the sound fxs sp08.mov from my folder:
1) Open the maxwell folder in the Artstech_Professors window.
2) Open the Public folder.
3) Select the sound fxs sp08.mov  and drag it to a folder you create in the Documents folder on the computer.  There is also a Documents folder in your server folder, so make sure that you are moving the file to the computers Documents folder.

8) When you have moved the files and/or folders you need to the Documents folder of the computer disconnect from the server (THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! DISCONECT FROM THE SERVER BEFORE YOU OPEN FINAL CUT!!!).  If you don't disconnect from the server you may end up working over the network which isn't fast enough and will cause you nothing but grief.  So always disconnect before you start Final Cut.

3.   Using Final Cut Express and the only the facial sound F/Xs that we recorded in class (sound fxs SP08.mov):
B)   Create one minute symphony.
1) Find Final Cut Express HD on the computer and drag it into the Dock. Use Final Cut Express HD in the library because it is on all the macs. Click here for a graphic of where Final Cut Express is on the Libraries computers.
2)  Open Final Cut Express (be sure you are disconnected from the server before you open FCE) and set up your personal Preferences and System Settings for your Final Cut project (1 and 2 will open automatically).
THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IF YOU WANT TO FIND ALL YOUR PROJECTS PARTS AND MOVE THEM TO YOUR SERVER OR ANOTHER COMPUTER OR DRIVE.
a) Choose Setup window will open, select Setup For: DV-NTSC and Primary Scratch Disk: Choose folder> Documents folder (make sure you don't let it default to the server!!!).
b) External A/V window will open (it's asking for a firewire device) select Continue. or connect and turn on your camera or deck and select Check Again.
c) Save
your project File > create a new folder in the documents folder (or on your firewire drive or the hard drive you want the project on) and name your project.  If you do this before the next step you won't have extra folders in your computer's documents folder.
d) Set the System Settings: Final Cut Express HD > System Settings the System Settings window opens, Select the Scratch Disks tab (this should be the default) and press the Set button and lead it to the folder you just created and saved you project in, then click on Choose.
3) Import the sound fxs sp08,mov that we shot in class.   Use only the sounds and images that we recorded in class in the sound fxs sp08.mov .  This should be in your folder in the Documents folder on the computer.
a) In the Final Cut Express top menu select File>Import>Files and then lead it to the sound fxs file in your folder in the Document folder of the computer.
4) Double click on the file in the Browser to open it in the Viewer.
5) Set In and Out points and then drag it onto the timeline, repeat as needed.
a) Set up the rhythm visually as well as with the audio.
b) Use no special visual effects, just cuts, no video dissolves or transitions, no speed changes, no reverse video or audio, no filters
c) Multiple layers of Video and Audio. You may adjust audio volume levels (use the Help in Final Cut to figure out how).
d) Audio does not have to match video.
e) Have fun and make it as interesting as you can. It should be a one minute piece that is complete and you are proud of.
6) Make sure you use all of the different sound fxs at least once in your piece.
C) Save your Final Cut Express project in the Documents folder on the computer.  This is a small file a most a few mb.  It is only a set of instructions that tells Final Cut how to play the source material.   In order for it to work  you also will need the source files (in this case it is the sound f/xs SP08.mov  that we shot in class.  Close Final Cut. Then reconnect to the fileserver at fileserver.artstech.utah.edu  the  move your project file to your Documents folder on the fine arts server (or copy it to you flash drive or burn it to the F/Xs disk as a session) .  We will use these in class next week.

D) To reopen your project to work on it again, move the project file and the source material (sound fxs sp08,mov) to the Documents folder on the computer, disconnect from the server and then double click on the project file.  Make sure you disconnect from the files server (fileserver.artstech.utah.edu) before you double click on your Final Cut project file.  Do not double click on (OPEN) any file on the files server.  Always move it to the computer before you open it.  No even to just see what it is.  Move it first.

E)
After you have changed you project you can save it.   Then move the final Cut Project file with the changes to the server.  You don't need to move the source material back to the server because it is already there.
