Portland is a great city to ride in. It has bike lanes on most streets, and the motorists are very forgiving. Especially considering the size of the city. We descended towards Riverview cemetary, having met a cyclist who led us on the best route to the Sellwood bridge. A short jaunt on Tacoma St. led us to the Springwater rail trail. A flat and nearly straight path all the way across the city.
We didn't even have to use the bike lanes today, we were rail trailing it. A rail trail is an abandoned rail corridor, which has been renovated for the use of pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians. It is a huge relief to be able to avoid cars entirely and ride carefree on a mostly flat trail. This trail and others like it that we used convinced me to up my membership in the "Rails to Trails" society. The society raises money to buy and convert abandoned rail corridors.
In the eastern subburbs of Portland, we got off the trail and headed north to Dabney State Park. Here begins the Crown Pt Scenic Highway up the Columbia River Gorge. Patti's still aching muscles made it up the hills to Corbett. Where we camped in an R.V. Park.
