August 18 east of Uniontown PA to Meadow Lake, MD Day's Map Day's Journal Previous Journal Next Journal

Lots of hills today. I was really cranky from lack of sleep. I worked out my tension by sprinting up the hills. After a few of those I settled down.

Our first stop was the Ft. Necessity National Historic site. A young and headstrong George Washington fought a loosing battle here against a much larger French force. There is also an Inn at the site. It is set up as it used to be in the 1780's. Back then this was a major highway. Travellers would stop at these Inns along the way for food and lodging.

Youghiogeny Lake was very inviting. The blue water and forested hills looked nice on our descent towards it. We didn't stop to check it out. Shortly after the lake we came up to a construction zone. The traffic was being let through one way at a time. We were hindered during our turn by the hill, and the fresh sticky tar. The road grabbed our tires and held us in place. An odd sensation.

We lacked a camera for the Maryland border and for the Mason Dixon line crossings. Both Patti and I flatted today. This was Patti's second and last flat. Our campsite was relaxing. We got a lot of much needed sleep there.
