Route 40 is pretty highly trafficked, but it's got a wide shoulder in most places. It was a fairly easy jaunt to Uniontown. The ascent out of Uniontown was the hard part. This hill was the most significant climb we'ld done since MacDonald Pass. It was only three miles long, but it took us an hour. At the top of the hill was the aptly named Summit Inn. It was built around 1900 and had once entertained president Roosevelt, the Fords, and the Rockefellers. After our big climb, we were ready to call it a day. We had only ridden for a few hours. The rain that began as we weighed our options was a factor.

The hotel stay wasn't hideously expensive either. Nor was the very good dinner. We fretted about the dinner dress code, but were assured we would be admitted in our shorts and tshirts. After dinner we listened to President Clinton's Monica Lewinski speach.

At 1 am my friend Vince returned my call. I thought about meeting up with him in DC. After the phone call I couldn't sleep. I went downstairs and talked to the night staff. They told me all about the ghosts that haunted this hotel. The place was pretty spooky. Best way I can describe it is the Overlook Hotel of Stephen King's, "The Shining". I didn't get much sleep after that.
