August 16 Wheeling, WV to Washington, PA Day's Map Day's Journal Pic 0 Previous Journal Next Journal

Getting to Wheeling was a lot easier than getting out. The main artery is an interstate highway that tunnels through the cliffs that surround the town. An eastern interstate highway is suicide on a bike. 250 is a likely alternate, running south out of town along the river. But it to is closed to bicycles. The town has a rail trail but it's only a few miles long. We ambled around town, sniffing out the best route without a map. Our sense of direction was pretty good by now. It's hard to explain but we just knew what the right roads would be. We got a few mile down a promising road. A mile or two in we met a nice couple enjoying the sun on their porch. They gave us cokes and told us that this was the right road, Bog's Run Road. It would lead up and back to 40.

The roads today, including Bog's Run, were really scenic. It was like riding a thin ridge way up high all day. After the initial climb we didn't really have many big hills. The Pennsylvania border signs were pretty as well. Stone obelisks. Very unique.

By now we knew that we would make it. I had to go back to work on the first of September. Considering how little we still had to go we were doing well. I finally relaxed about the mileage. We stopped in Washington, an industrial town in the South West corner of Pennsylvania. Our motel was pretty run down today.
