Today we pushed hard to get to the state border. The traffic and the hills were getting worse. Our amazing weather continued, with sunny skies and little wind.
We got onto route 40, the National Road today. We would follow it for a few days. It is very historic, dotted with historical sites and markers. The road, built on a indian trail, was pioneered by George Washington during a campaign against the French.
St. Clairsville is a pretty and very old town just outside of Wheeling. The end of the day was a big descent into the Ohio River Valley. Wheeling is built in a deep crevass, carved by the river. The hills around are steep, pretty and thickly wooded.
