August 13 Hunstville, OH to Mt Vernon, OH Day's Map Day's Journal Previous Journal Next Journal

After we passed the interstate trouble began. Route 229 has limited shoulder the whole way. East of the interstate it also has traffic. Being in the east, traffic means beligerant motorists. Just west of Mt Vernon we came across the biggest looser motorist in the whole country. This long haired blond guy was doing 80 in his light colored Chevy Chevette. He couldn't go any faster because he was tailgaiting the guy in front of him. As soon as he saw us he honked and gave us the finger from inside his car. We smiled and waved. He honked louder and gave us the left handed finger out the window. We smiled bigger and made huge friendly waving motions. He stopped at the bottom of the hill. He didn't stop long. A car crested the hill behind him doing 70. What a hopeless, mindless, stupid, reckless, hate filled, beligerant moron.

We got off the main road a little after that. We lacked a detailed map, and the farm roads weren't as regular as in the "I" states. So we winged it to Mt. Vernon. On the way we found the wreck of a DC9. Local told us it had crashed nearbye 30 years ago.

In Mt Vernon we were just in time for the Dan Emitt Music and Arts festival. Downtown was filled with tables of food and goodies. We had big beers, lots of food, and enjoyed the Music. Well some of the music was pretty bad, but we enjoyed most of it.

The foothils of the Appalachains began today. The terrain was all rolling hills and getting hillier.
