We got up early (well 8:30 is early to us) and did the short ride into Ohio. At Ft. Recovery we learned about the settlers' battles with White Turtle. This man gathered several tribes together to fight the settlers. He was successfull at this battleground twice. The third time a stronger American Army defeated the band. After White Turtle's allies, the british, refused to protect the fleeing indians in a british fort, the allied tribes disbanded.
At Ft. Recovery we got Ohio tourist maps. We were delighted to find that the Bicycle Museum of America was only thirty miles away in New Bremen. We had to goy.
The museum was impressive. I've been interested in bicycles for quite a while. I've done more than one school project on the history and future of bicycles. At the museum I saw many of the bikes I had read about. Lots of high wheelers and odd unicycles. One uni had boots instead of a wheel. There were also many newer bicycles. Like the hoppy bikes. They are propelled with a hopping motion. We enjoyed the Harley Davidson, and Coca-Cola bicycle displays as well. There was even a section about people who bicycled across the country. One interesting fact was that during the 1890's, the new "bicycle" was so popular that unrelated products used "bicycle" as a band name. The only surviving example are bicycle playing cards. The tour guide gave us free waterbottles. Unfortunately there were no postcards.
We camped at night in a city park. This would be our last. Although the people in the biker bar across the street were friendly, we knew that now we were in the east. Too many people in the east for everyone to be friendly. The towns even started discouraging campers with "No Camping In The City Park" signs.
