A quarter mile from our campsite we had breakfast at the Cuny Table diner. The elderly women who made our home cooked meal were exceedingly kind. Even the German woman who didn't speak english. It was just like eating at gramma's. Filled, we road off on our dirt road towards the National Park headquarters. We stopped there as well and bought more postcards.

Our string of dry weather ended today, as did our unbelievable good fortune of never having to face headwinds. We pushed really hard today. We crossed a very muddy ravine where a washed out bridge used to be to get to Manderson. There we had coffee, cokes and lunch. We continued, and once again had to beg for shelter as lightning poured down. The quilt maker who helped us had a very appropriate name, considering the weather.

When the thunder stopped we said thanks and continued toward Wounded Knee. Here, the army ended the conflict with the Sioux in a horrific massacre. The conquered indians wanted to gather for a ghost dance. The army forbid this and rounded up tribe. A shot was fired, and the hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned indians were mowed down even as the women and children fled. A very sad place. We paid our respects again.

As we left the graveyard, the weather improved. Our headwind, became a slight tailwind and the rain stopped. We pushed on into Nebraska. The good roads and long downhill sped us into Gordon where we got the first hotel we could find.
