July 20 Newcastle, WY to north of Custer, SD Day's Map Day's Journal Previous Journal Next Journal

We got out early again, trying to beat the heat. The pool water dried off me within minutes. It was a short trip to the border of our sixth state. The steep hills began at about the same time. The ones just before Jewel Cave were especially steep. The shoulder was limited as well. Partly to sightsee, and partly to escape the heat, we did both tours of Jewel Cave. The cold cold air inside the caves was delicious. The historic tour leads you down the original entrance, guided 1.5 miles by candlelight. The modern tour takes you down in an elevator to the depths within. An amazing fact is that despite the miles and miles of caves already explored, geologists estimate that only 5% of the cave has been mapped. While we were there an expedition team was inside mapping areas never before seen.

The heat outside was sibsiding by the time we finished the tours. The heat wave was ending too, the extreme heat didn't bother us again for the rest of the trip.

We continued to Custer. At the visitor center we learned of Country Village Jamboree Campground, three miles up the road. We had about an hour and a half left of all you can eat buffet. We flew to dinner and gorged ourselves. We could barely walk to our tent.

We could see Crazy Horse miles away. Especially once the lights went on. At night it thundered and lightning filled the sky. We huddled in the little tent, next to a monstrous RV, complete with push out rooms, satellite TV, and a vacuum cleaner. So maybe it was a lust hate relationship we had with RV's instead.
