The nationwide heat wave continued. Temperatures soaring over one hundred. We got out early, while it was still bearable and rode until just after lunch. Where we'ld stop at whatever public building we could find and wait out the heat. Most often that public building turned out to be a bar. This time it was in Osage, where the bartender told us, "It's just too cottonpicking hot." We talked to the guys in the bar about the same cancer tour, now two weeks ahead of us. The terrain was pretty flat and desolate.
I got another flat today, so I rotated the tires. Flat fixing is more taxing on a tour. First the trailer has to come off. Then the racks. Then you can get to the tire. I was on my third or fourth flat by now. Patti still had none.
We camped at the fountain park, on the eastern edge of Newcastle. Newcastle to us seemed like a huge city, 3000+ people. Although our hostess was dismayed at the fact that the entire state had fewer people than her home town back east, we were glad to be in the big city. Big enough for a pizza hut. Plus we liked Wyoming because the elevation and population were listed on every town sign. The park/resort was renowned for it's natural spring. After the heat of the day the pool felt amazing. As it would again in the morning before setting off.
After settling in we walked to the Pizza hut and began our feast. Our metabilisms were in high gear now. I ate three salads, bread sticks, ice tea, most of a large supreme stuffed crust pizza, and a pitcher of beer. We somehow got a Pizza Hut coupon book and were now on the Pizza Hut trail. We ate a ton of Pizza Hut on the trip. I haven't eaten it since the trip. We waddled back to the park and slept off our big meal. The remaining pizza I strapped to my bike for lunch the next day.
