We spent most of the afternoon at Devil's tower. It's amazing. Indian legend says it was created when seven sisters prayed on top of a stump for protection from a giant bear. As they prayed the stump grew and grew. The angry bear clawed the columns into it. In punishment, the bears long tail and long ears were cut off. Geologists say this is the tube of an ancient volcano. Erosion has taken all the soft outer stone away.
We did the full hike, examined the remnants of a controlled forest fire of a few years ago. We took rolls of pictures. Patti fell in love with the Prairie Dogs. We were impressed by all the mountian climbers, both thin and thick, testing their skill. The antique, buffalo hide, sewing machine was interesting as well.
We set out late, and after climbing the big hill I immediately got a flat tire. We ate lunch at a little store after I fixed it. We bought our "mojo"'s here. Patti, a stuffed Prairie dog and I, a Jackelope. They were affixed to our bikes for the rest of the ride.
At dark we reached Moorcroft. The last few miles were flat plains, apparently we had exited the Black Hills. The dark and the traffic were regretable. In town, we attempted to get rooms in a hotel, but the owner was a real pain. He didn't like cyclists AT ALL. Plus the cost was high. So we continued on, eventually paying a guy $5 to let us camp in his yard.
