We ascended the pass early, the Cancer Society riders had gotten frostbite up here. For us the weather continued to be perfect. By now we realized that my long sleeve undershirt was perfect for Patti. It blocked the sun, but let some air flow. Plus her skin was getting dark finally. We were both pretty used to spending almost all of our time outside.
The pass was similar to Lolo. Higher, but easier I'ld say. Very gradual until the last few miles then sharp inclines. Just put it into that low gear and wait it out. We took entirely too many pictures up top. The euphoria of beating the mountain made the view incredible. The descent was exilarating. Extreemly steep. We ate 16oz T-Bone Steaks in a Casino in Helena for lunch.
At a bike shop, we had the misfortune to meet some kind local cyclists. One was on a tour himself, stopping in town to visit his brother. They recommended we take a northerly route around Canyon Ferry Lake. Route 12 would be too highly trafficked. I now disagree. The lake was very pretty. And had lots of campgrounds. Yet our route involved hills, long dirt roads and was much longer than the direct route. If you are just into it for the scenery then our route was better, but otherwise go straight on 12. At least it proved to us that we could do some serious miles now. We were in really good shape now. We tried an RV park in Townsend but it was the permanent resident only type. We ended up staying in a motel.
