July 08 John Long National Forest, MT to Elliston, MT Day's Map Day's Journal Previous Journal Next Journal

It was another long gradual ascent today towards MacDonald Pass. Most of the route was on I90, until we got to Garrison junction. We had our first experience surfing a storm front. Tail winds pushed us along all day. We stopped at a little town, famous as a cattle stockyards and ate lunch.

In Garrison Junction, 12 splits from I90 and heads towards the pass. We stopped here for coffee and cola's. The gas station owner regailed us with tales of the national cancer society ride. We had been hearing about this group since Kennewick. We were trailing them by about a week and wanted to catch up. There were 500 of them making the coast to coast journey. Accompanied with three semis carrying food, equiptment, belongings, and showers. Such luxury. If only we could sneak into that group. The week before they had been by here. Until now we had only heard awed wonder about this group. The station owner told us how he thought that some of the fat ones were going to die, huffing and puffing along on heavy V mountain bikes. He wondered why there hadn't been a fitness requirement to join the ride. His point of view was hilarious. We also met a guy who owned "The biggest dog, and the littlest dog", a huge St. Bernard and a tiny little scruff dug - best pals.

In Avon, we stopped again, the grocery store clerk let us call up to Elliston and reserve rooms at the "Last Chance Resort". Another hour of riding found us there, watching one channel of TV and thoroughly enjoying ourselves. Patti broke into a fit of spontaneous dancing.
