The day included Alpowa Summit, a nearly three thousand foot hill. The ascent itself wasn't too troubling. The view from the top wasn't bad either. As with all hills climbed, the effort made the view more impressive.
Along the way we came across a woman with a flat car tire. I gave her my cell phone to call for help. A few miles later I got a flat myself. We rested, swam, and marvelled at the salmon at Chief Joseph St Park. The hills there were definately foothills of the Rockies. Rising up great cliffs at the edge of the road.
At the Park we stopped at the Allopwai interpretive center. We had a nice chat about snakes with the very friendly volunteer manning the center. She showed us pictures of the Texas Rattlesnake festival. Her husband loves snakes, enough to take a picture of her with a big Boa Constrictor on her shoulders. From the look of abject terror on her face, it was clear she didn't love them quite as well.
We pulled into Lewiston Idaho later on. We spent a little time biking around town, especially the historic center of town. And then biked south on a bike path to Hell's Gate St Park. At one point, a landslide had pulled a big section of the path into the river. The detour took us up a substantial hill that our legs didn't appreciate. My left knee was beginning to ache a bit.
At the park, we went to a bonfire put on by the rangers. The Rangers made us play a name game to get everyone sociable. I was "Dinosaur Dave", Patti was "Patti Plattypus". Despite that, we had a great time, eating free marshmallows and chatting with the rest of the campers.
