We started the day, by biking back up the imposing hill we had descended to get into the Park. We stopped at a farm stand to eat some of the best cherries I've ever eaten. We also stopped at a store for coffee and to buy and Emu eggshell. I then had to figure out how to pack the egg so that it wouldn't break before we got to a post office.
After that, our wind tunnel ride continued. The terrain became even more arid and sunny. The sun was becoming a problem for Patti again. Despite the heat, she had endured riding in tights and a windbreaker. Otherwise she'ld end up crispy from the sun. We went a long long way today. Most of that way without any restrooms.
The road, and the parrallel rail road, went through impressive tunnels at points. The road tunnels came complete with signal systems, alerting cars that bicycles were using the narrow tunnels. One of the rail road tunnels to me looked exactly like a dragon's lair, being blasted from black, black lava rock.
In Roosevelt we stopped and considered a campground. With the wind at our backs we decided to push on into evening to get to Crow Butte. Patti pushed really hard and was exhausted by the time we got to Crow Butte Island.
